Nielsen began on his fourth symphony in 1914 when he had just left the position as conductor at The Royal Theatre. According to a letter of May 1915, the composition was under way, but later the work was hampered by difficulties. On 14 January 1916, just five days before the first performance, the work was finished. See more about this work at The Royal Library
