After Franz Neruda's death in March 1915, Nielsen was appointed as his successor as conductor in The Music Society (Musikforeningen). Nielsen interrupted the work on his Fourth Symphony to compose a work commemorating Neruda. The finished text by Julius Clausen was sent to Nielsen on 1 September 1915 and the first performance took place on 11 October. See more about this work at The Royal Library
